High Commissioner Syd Maddicott and leaders of the NGOs signed the contract in Yaounde recently.

The British High Commission to Cameroon has awarded CFA 54 million to some Cameroon Non Governmental Organizations to fund projects in the areas of human rights and climate change.

The accepted bids concern projects dealing with the reduction of deforestation through the use of innovative fish smoking techniques, the provision of legal aid to prisoners, the social re-insertion of minor ex-convicts and the inclusion of a climate change register in the language lessons of secondary schools. Other approved bids devised an award for excellent climate change journalism in Cameroon, the promotion of democracy among secondary school students, among others.

Speaking during the contract signing ceremony, the British High Commissioner to Cameroon, Syd Maddicott, congratulated the project implementers on the success of their bids and enjoined them to run watertight budgets, as the High Commission, he said, would be more demanding on accountability to promote transparency and good practice. "We want to see the lessons that your organizations could give because we think they are relevant to other organizations doing project work" the diplomat said.

According to a release issued by the communication unit of the British High Commission, more bids would be approved for funding in the course of the year to take up CFA 90 million still available in the High Commission's Challenge Fund. The Fund, the release states, supports innovative, small-scale high impact projects in the areas of human rights, democracy and climate change. Awards from this Fund, the release further states, vary but are typically between CFA 5 and 10 million.
