National Council on Sports (NCS) has revealed that nine athletes from different sports tested positive to anabolic steroid and other stimulants at the last National Sports Festival held in Kaduna, in February, and will at least, face two years ban.
Rising from a three-day meeting held in Port Harcourt on Friday, it disclosed that four athletes namely Ernest Ekanem (Ogun), Omodara Omotosho (Ondo), Sidi Bayo (Edo), and Maryam Tadedun Bayelsa all tested positive to anabolic steroid.
In weightlifting, the following lifters, David Eze (Oyo) and Samuel Anazodo from Abia State, were said to have tested positive, while three other athletes in Badminton were not named, as investigations have not been concluded.
The athletes were discovered from 90 random tests in all sports at the festival.
Their respective coaches were in attendance during the hearing, which lasted several days, and their states sports councils are said to be already aware of their offenses.
"The penalty for athletes that tested positive to performance enhancing substance are well known, and would be applied accordingly", an official said.
Aside drug offences, the council also looked into the possibility of packaging a last sports policy for the country, and examining the reward system in sports since independence, and concluded that the present situation, where sports men and women are ignorant of what will accrue to them after winning laurel for the country at major world championship was cruel.
The council, therefore, decided to include in the sports policy, everything that would encourage and motivate athletes to perform better at major world event.
Another landmark decision the council reached was how to honour former sportsmen and women, with the like of Nojeem Maiyegun, Jerry Enyeazu and former Head of State, Yakubu Gowon, in the forefront.
On how soon the sports policy would be ready for implementation, a source disclosed that members are working hard to package it as soon as possible for Nigeria's sports men and women to begin to reap the fruits of their labour.
The council members comprise all state sports commissioners, director of sports, secretary to all sports federations and their counterparts in local government sports councils.
