Kampala — FOUR women are among the 60 Somali Police commanders passed out on Thursday at Mandela National Stadium after a six-week training.

The UNDP-funded training was implemented by the Uganda police force.

The Commanders from Puntland, a de-facto state of Somalia, started training on May 18, spending three weeks in Masindi District and the last three in the field.

The course covered management, leadership, station command and instructional techniques.

Speaking at the pass-out ceremony, the internal affairs minister, Kirunda Kivejinja, urged the commanders to work to bring peace to Somalia. "If you can create peace in Puntland, it will be very easy to bring peace to Somalia.

Puntland should be the centre of peace in the country," Kivejinja told the officers.

He advised them to protect themselves to sustain the struggle for a better Somalia. "Fight without dying so that you live to fight another battle."

He promised to travel to Somalia to see how they perform in the field.

In 2005, the Uganda Police trained another 68 Somali officers. Another batch underwent training in 2007. The Force also sends its commanders to Somali police academies to train them.

Somalia's UNDP country representative, Stuart Donaldson; Gen. Bashir Muhamad Gamar, the Somali Deputy Police Commander and Senior Superintendent of Police Felix Kaweesi attended.
