Nairobi — More than 5,000 young people on Saturday attended a peace rally at which retired president Daniel arap Moi and former Kikuyu MP Paul Muite - once bitter political rivals - found themselves in an unlikely camaraderie.
Mr Muite was among the leaders at a peace rally for the youth at Nyayo Gardens in Nakuru. The young people attended the event organised to promote harmony among the different ethnic communities living in the area.
Mr Muite praised the retired president for spearheading peace and reconciliation efforts across the country following last year's post-election violence.
Mr Muite had on numerous occasions run into trouble with the Moi government and was several times locked in police cells for holding illegal meetings.
But on Saturday, the Safina party leader promised to attend similar meetings organised by the former president. Also present were assistant minister Jebii Kilimo, Saboti MP Eugene Wamalwa and at least six former MPs.
Mr Moi said the government should not ignore the youth.
Mr Wamalwa said Kenya should emulate Americans who shunned ethnic and racial differences to elect President Barack Obama whose roots are Kenyan.
