Nairobi — Kenya will launch a destination marketing website in the Russian language to reach potential tourists among the 140 million population of Russians.
The launch is part of the ongoing Source Market Diversification Programme that begun this month and is currently underway in the emerging markets of eastern Europe comprising Russia, Czech Republic and Poland.
The website will be linked to the www.magicalkenya.com which is Kenya's destination marketing medium.
This website is aimed at breaking the language barrier which has been a major drawback in marketing Kenya in non-English speaking eastern European countries.
In a meeting between a Kenyan delegation led by Tourism minister Najib Balala and his Russian counterpart Anatoly Yarochkin in Moscow on Monday, the two agreed to take more active roles in tourism promotion activities in both countries.
Promote Kenya
A statement from the Ministry of Tourism public relations officer Mwangi Gakunga said for the next two months, Kenya will use Sh16 million for promotional activities including billboards, printing and distribution of Russian language brochures before the website is set up.
"The Government of Kenya should invest much more towards the promotion of the various and unique products in Kenya," said the Russian minister. He said his country's tourist agency will work with the Kenya Tourist Board to promote Kenya in Russia.
