Arusha — The government of Tanzania through Tanzania National Action Network on Small Arms (TANANSA), together with the international community of 80 countries, is taking action against the proliferation of conventional arms in order to make the world a safer place to live in.
The country joined the global week of action against gun violence, organized by the International Action Network on Small Arms on June 15-21.
The campaign was meant to draw government's attention and the people's awareness on the dangers of small arms trade globally.
TANANSA has called on the government to take an active role in the forthcoming UN discussions on arms trade treaty.
According to TANANSA Chief Coordinator, Peter McOmalla, the need for a strong arms trade treaty was very high as 1,000 people are killed daily across the globe through the misuse of small arms.
McOmalla said activists in Tanzania joined their colleagues around the world in demanding effective policies to control the flood of small arms.
The TANANSA coordinator said he expected no controversies in the arms trade restrictions but did not rule out possibility of some countries blocking them despite the obvious need to control arms trade.
