Angola: Water Projects Conceived According to Urban Plans, Secretary of State

29 June 2009

Lobito — The secretary of State for waters, Luis Filipe da Silva, said Saturday in Benguela that the projects of the sector are being conceived according to new urban plans of each town.

He was addressing the press at the end of a working visit to the coastal Benguela Province where he rejoiced with the progress made in the construction of the "Aguas de Benguela" project (Waters of Benguela), whose second phase is expected to be concluded by December, by the Brazilian contractor Odebrecht.

The second phase of the project expects the construction, infra-structures rehab and extension of drinkable water distribution in the new suburbs of the towns of Benguela and Lobito and the villages of Catumbela and Baia Farta.

Despite the success of the first and second phases, the government of Benguela Province backs the launching of a third stage due to the demographic growth of the coastal towns and villages.

The local governor, Armando da Cruz Neto, has announced that the project will produce three cubic centimeters per second, in the next three years.

The present capacity of one cubic centimeter or 1,000 litres per second does not match the needs of the local population estimated at three million people, not to talk about the fast growth of the industry sector in the province, where 80 factories are expected to be established soon.

Amid the new facilities are the oil refinery in Lobito, the international airport in Catumbela and the new soccer stadium.

Started in 2004 the "Aguas de Benguela" project benefits now 1,7 million people.
