Zimbabwe: Ruwa Residents Get Water After Two Years

30 June 2009

Harare — RUWA residents, who had been without water for nearly two years, last Friday finally had water supplies restored to them after the local board resumed works at its water treatment plant.

It was all smiles in the town as people took a rest from travelling long distances to fetch water from private boreholes and council bowsers.

However, there was no joy for Zimre Park residents, who are still connected to the Harare plant.

Ruwa Local Board head of engineering services Engineer Anthony Mujuru confirmed the development saying they started working on the resuscitation of the water treatment plant after taking over water management from Zinwa in April this year.

Eng Mujuru said the local board had acquired two pumps that are currently running at the plant to replace those that Zinwa reportedly took for repair sometime back.

Eng Mujuru hailed Harare City Council for bailing the board out through a donation of 15 tonnes of water purification chemicals.

"This is actually a commendable job by the board considering that our residents had been without water since early last year.

"We took over from Zinwa in April this year, and within two months we have managed to repair the tanks, buying two pumps and to do a lot of small repairs to the equipment that had last been used a long time ago.

"The two pumps are capable of pumping water enough to supply residents for three days a week, but add more pumps to improve daily supply.

"We have another problem of some pumps that were taken by Zinwa for repair. They are not yet back and this is hindering proper work at the plant," said Eng Mujuru.

Several residents who talked to The Herald could not hide their joy over the latest development, with some describing it as a "miracle".
