Uganda: 300 NAADS Chicks Set Ablaze in Thatched Hut

Kampala — Unknown persons set ablaze a grass-thatched hut with 300 chicks provided by the National Agricultural Advisory Services (NAADS) to a youth group in Gulu municipality.

The deputy resident district commissioner, Milton Odongo, told journalists in his office that people opposed to the Government initiative to aid youth groups could be behind the fire.

Odongo said the chick project was part of the Government efforts to resettle formerly internally displaced persons. Worth sh375,000, the chiccks were given to Kasubi-Bardege Cooperative Saving Society.

NAADS officials said the youth had opted to temporarily store the chicks in the hut as they completed the construction of a proper poultry house. Odongo said the Government had offered sh78m through the presidential adviser on northern affairs, Richard Todwong, to buy 15,000 broiler chicks and 400 bags of chicken feed to start the programme in the four divisions of Bardege, Layibi, Pece and Laroo.

At least 45 youth groups are beneficiaries of the project according to a NAADS official, Alex Otenya. The NAADS officials have promised to provide the group with more chicks but on condition that they complete their chicken house.
