Abuja — About fifty- eight residents of the Federal Capital Territory were on Saturday convicted by mobile courts for failing to observe the monthly environmental sanitation exercise.
Those convicted were sentenced to two weeks imprisonment or to pay fines of between N1,000 to N5,000, depending on the magnitude of the offences preferred against them.
Our reporter observed the mobile courts in operation at in Karu, Old Parade Ground, Lugbe and Kubwa conducting trials on the accused persons, who pleaded guilty.
After the trial, Director of Abuja Environmental Protection Board (AEPB), Dr. Abubakar Yabo told journalists that the board was satisfied with the level of compliance by the residents on the restriction.
"In the next monthly sanitation exercise, AEPB will carry out house to house enforcement in order to make residents comply with the sanitation directive," he said.
He warned residents to stay at home and clean their environment during such exercise, saying that any one found walking on the street will be prosecuted.
