Nigeria: Construction Firm, Ex-Presidential Aide Named in Halliburton Scam

A foreign construction company operating in Nigeria has been implicated in the $180 million Halliburton bribe scandal.

According to sources close to the Inspector General (IG) of Police, Mike Okiro-led investigative panel set up to unravel the brains behind the scandal, the company and one unnamed former Special Assistant to former President Olusegun Obasanjo have been discovered to have played a prominent role in the sharing of the illegal fund.

While the construction company, said to be currently enjoying massive patronage from the Federal Government and some wealthy states, was believed to have played the role of unknown link in the payment of the fund, the ex-presidential aide was reputed to have taken over $6 million for sharing among some yet-to-be unveiled beneficiaries.

The ex-presidential aide, the source said, was mentioned as a key player in the scandal by one of the former Group Managing Director (GMD) of Nigeria National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC) who was questioned by the panel recently.
