Abuja — Jigawa State government has secured over N100 million grants from Millennium Development Goals for the eradication of maternal mortality in the state, the state commissioner of women affairs, Hajiya Fatima Widi Jallo has said.
Speaking at the opening ceremony of a two-day experience sharing tour for the Safe Motherhood Demand Programme, Hajiya Fatima said that the ministry was able to secure MDGs for various projects in 2007 and 2008 respectively.
Hajiya Fatima Widi said further that, various teams of experts from Katsina, Yobe and Zamfara states were part of the meeting, which was aimed at sharing experience among the participants.
She pointed out that only concerted efforts can push down the menace of maternal mortality, a global tragedy, to the barest minimum in the state.
The commissioner further stated that a safe motherhood initiative was launched in 2003 with three main components that include strengthening the supply of basic and comprehensive obstetric care, increasing the demand for and access to obstetric services and raising public knowledge and awareness of the danger of pregnancy and child birth.
She added that the goal of safe motherhood practice has been achieved, as according to her, presently the ministry has intervention centers in 214 communities with over 20 emergency vehicles serving as ambulances to some remote communities.
