Nigeria: Army Establishes "Think-Tank" in Makurdi

Makurdi — The Nigerian Army Council has approved the restructuring of the former Institute of Technology and Environmental Studies to become Army Institute of Technology and Environmental Studies (AITES) which goal is to serve as a "Think Tank" outfit of the force.

Army Chief of Operations, Major General M.B. Obi who disclosed this at the weekend during the fourth matriculation ceremony of the institute signaling commencement of 2008/2009 academic session at the Nigerian Army School of Military Engineering (NASME), in Makurdi, Benue State, said the decision was to fulfill the Chief of Army Staff's dream for the institute to become "a problem solving outfit of the Nigerian Army".

The restructuring is, according to Major General Obi who was accompanied by the General Officer Commanding (GOC) 82 Division, Major General Mohammad Danhanne Isah, to entail the establishment of more departments, more funding and employment of requisite academic and non-academic staffs.

General Obi said the Department of Army Operations would be willing to assist AITES in pursuit of its goals, accordingly.

The Commandant of NASME who also doubles as the Rector of the institute, Brig. General A.A. Olaniyi presented 278 new intakes for matriculation, saying the school which provides middle level manpower was also open for para-military organizations and the civil populace.

The commandant thanked the Benue Sate governor, Gabriel Suswam and the Speaker of the state House of Assembly, Terseer Tsumba for their support to NASME and the institute, saying achievements recorded at the institute came with the support of the duo.

Governor Suswam, who was represented by the speaker, commended the setting up of then institute, saying the choice of Makurdi has greatly enhanced the quest of the government to give education in the people.
