Luanda — The director general of the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization (UNFAO), Jacques Diof, recognised on Monday the importance that Angolan President, José Eduardo dos Santos gives to agriculture as priority sector to boost the economy.
"I am very happy with the priority that President dos Santos and the Angolan government have been giving to the farming sector, in particular to the family agriculture", Jaques Diof told the press at the end of the meeting he held with the Angolan Agriculture minister, Pedro Canga.
During the audience, the director general of FAO was informed about the actions related to the creation of fundamental rural infrastructures to make the farming sector more competitive and productive.
Pedro Canga and Jaques Diof reviewed the programmes of granting credits to farmers to acquire agricultural inputs and about the ongoing actions regarding forest, cultivation and cattle-breeding reproduction.
Together with the manufacturing industry, the civil engineering and tourism, the agriculture sector comprised the programme of government for economic diversification. Its renewal aims at reducing the dependence of Angola on oil and diamonds revenues, whose prices at the international market have lowered considerably.
Jacques Diouf is in Luanda since last Sunday for a two-day work trip, in the ambit of the organization of the 26th regional conference for Africa to be hosted by Angola in 2010.
