Nigeria: NOC Sets July 11 to Mark Olympic Day

30 June 2009

Lagos — Twenty-three states in the country have registered to be part of this year's celebration of the Olympic Day scheduled to hold on July 11. Three key events, including a 10km run, are also on the card to make the event a total departure from how it was previously celebrated.

President of the Nigeria Olympic Committee (NOC) Engr. Habu Gummel said yesterday in Lagos that for 20 unbroken years, the International Olympic Committee (IOC) encouraged all it's affiliates to observe the Olympic Day.

"The Olympic Day will not just be about a mere 10km run but will now encompass other activities, such as cultural events, sports and general programmes to make the Olympic Day celebrations not only more exciting but also challenge to the youths," observed the NOC boss whose speech was read on his behalf by Mr. Olabanji Oladapo, scribe of the Olympic movement. While promising a bouquet of family friendly activities that includes cultural displays, carnival and other outdoor sports, the NOC boss stressed that any other 23 states that have registered to be part of the Day have the liberty to choose whatever event suitable to it's environment to celebrate it.

Coordinator of this year's celebration in the country Mr. Jonathan Dyagas said the NOC would not spare anything in ensuring that Nigeria matches how other countries mark the Day. "We have put everything in place to ensure a smooth celebration. We are only looking forward to Corporate Nigeria to join hands with us to do an event that everyone in the sports family will remember for a long time," concludes Mr. Dyagas.
