Asaba — DELTA State Commissioner for Health, Dr. Joseph Otumara, has officially confirmed that there was outbreak of poliomyelitis in five local government areas of the state, just as he called on parents and guardians to bring up their children and wards for what he described as "another round of supplemental immunization".
He blamed some local government councils of abysmal failure in effective immunization coverage of their areas.
The commissioner in a broadcast on the recent outbreak of the disease, said he was saddened by the sudden reported seven confirmed cases of wild polio virus in the state and gave the names of the affected local government areas as Ethiope West, Ughelli South, Ughelli North, Bomadi and Patani.
He asked Deltans not "to overlook the proximity of most of the local governments to each other, as the state has a state of emergency on her hands".
He has therefore advised parents and guardians "to bring their children forward without any reservation to benefit from another round of supplemental immunization coming up from July 4 to July 7, 2009".
