Cameroon: Female Fish Trader Duped CFA 1.4 million

Reports in the media about "feymamia" in Mutengene, fall on deaf ears.

This is what happened last week to a young lady whose name was got as Mado. She was seen moving half naked after being duped by con men that disappeared with the sum of CFA 1.4 million francs from her. According to Mado, the mother who trades in fish sent her from Yaounde to go to Limbe and buy fish worth CFA 900.000 francs. As she alighted from the bus in Mutengene, she fell in the dragnet of the swindlers who told her that they had over CFA 250 million francs and were looking for a native doctor to "cleanse" and "bless" the money for them to use hitch free. This, they said, was because the money belonged to a white who had an accident on his way to Europe and died saying they were afraid the spirit of the late man will haunt them.

Mado was convinced and she gave them the CFA 900.000 (which was meant for the purchase of fish in Limbe) in order for her to have her own share of the booty. Not satisfied, the conmen asked her to go and bring CFA 500.000 francs extra so that her own share of the booty would clock CFA 25 million francs. Mado suddenly left for Douala where she told her aunt that a friend has sent her some cartons of shoes and dresses worth CFA 5 million. She said she needed to pay only CFA 500.000 francs as customs duty to collect the goods from the Limbe beach. The aunt did not hesitate in giving Mado the money which she brought back to Mutengene and gave the swindlers.

At press time, Mado was already moving naked since the swindlers could not honour their own part of the deal. The "419" men all disappeared in thin air after receiving the money. A good Samaritan however gave Mado CFA 2.000 francs to pay her way to Douala. But what will she tell her aunt or the mother?

We hear stories of Feymannism everyday but people do not tend to believe them. In addition, how naive could she be to buy such a dull story?

Moreover, she just paid the price of trying to be part of the scam.
