Discussions are currently underway between the managements of Jam Radio and Cavalla Rubber Corporation (CRC) in Pleebo, Maryland County. When these discussions are being finalized, the CRC management will provide some technical and financial assistance to the only community radio in the area.
The Director of Radio at the local radio station, Anthony Allison, told a team of journalists from Monrovia recently that his management has made an appeal to the CRC management to assist them in providing a new transmitter that has coverage in the entire Maryland County.
Mr. Allison said the communities radio formerly the "Voice of Pleebo" equipment which was provided under the Mercy Corps Rural Community Radio Empowerment Project broke down two years ago.
He said because of the passion in the field of journalism, especially informing and educating local dwellers, they made a passionate appeal to Representative Bhofal Chambers, who represents the interest of the people of Sodoken District in the Legislature.
He alleged that instead of doing per the appeal, Rep. Chambers instead requested them to generate US$2,000 which he would augment to enable them procure a new transmitter.
The present equipment being used at Jam Radio, according to Allison, was provided by an individual, who he says has interest in information dissemination, especially in post-conflict situations, adding "the sub-branch of a Cellphone company in Pleebo is providing electricity free of charge.
When contacted, the General Manager of the Cavalla Rubber Corporation (CRC), John Y. Barkemene, confirmed that series of discussions have taken place between his management and that of Jam Radio.
He said Jam Radio management has asked him to serve as Chairman of its Board of Advisors, something he will eventually do, noting that providing assistance to the local radio station to inform and educate the citizenry is part of the CRC community development projects and has an allotment in its budget for said purpose.
According to Mr. Barkemene, media play a pivotal role in the socio-economic and political development of any society in the world, especially in post-conflict societies, but frowned on those who chose to use the media to pursue their own aggrandizement to undermine the efforts of patriotic people who are immensely contributing to the reconstruction process of Liberia.
