Africa: AU Commission Unhappy With African Political Situation

30 June 2009

Sirte — The chairperson of the African Union (AU) Commission, Jean Ping, has expressed grave concern at the reemerging of coups d'etat on the continent, and unconstitutional changes of government.

Speaking in the Libyan city of Sirte on Monday, at the opening of an ordinary session of the AU Executive Council, that precedes a summit of heads of state and government, Ping said "The political situation in the continent in general is still a cause of serious concern".

He cited the example of Madagascar, that has been suspended from the AU because of an unconstitutional change of government, and the recent assassination of the President of Guinea-Bissau, Joao Bernardo Vieira.

Ping said that the AU General Assembly is to appreciate the package of recommendations of the Executive Council to transform the Commission into an AU Authority.

As for the Commission's strategic plan, mainly about principles that guide the organ's five year plan, based on the following major pillars: Peace and Security, Development, Cooperation, Integration, Shared Values, and Institutional Empowerment, Ping described the plan as a decisive step.

"The plan represents a decisive step in the Commission's work, because it has a high capacity to mobilize the necessary means to carry out the integration of the continent", he claimed.
