Zimbabwe: Katuka Gets Hero Status

Harare — Retired army officer Colonel Taurai Katuka, who died last Thursday, has been declared a provincial hero and will be buried at the Bindura Provincial Heroes Acre today.

Col Katuka, who was 57, died at Parirenyatwa Hospital in Harare.

The late Col Katuka, also known by his Chimurenga name Comrade Eddie Tichaitora, was born in 1952 and attended Chindenga Primary School and later Nyamuzuwe and Mazowe high schools for his secondary education.

In 1974, he went to study in Sri Lanka, obtaining a Diploma in Mechanical Engineering at the University of Katubedde.

In 1977, Col Katuka joined the liberation struggle in Mozambique and at independence he was attested into the Zimbabwe National Army.

During his service, Col Katuka furthered his education, obtaining a Bachelor of Technology (Civil Engineering) Honours Degree at the University of Zimbabwe in 1992.

In 1998 he went to America where he earned a Master of Science in International Resources Planning Management at the Naval Post-Graduate School.

Col Katuka retired from the army in 2001 and joined the Ministry of Local Government, Public Works and National Housing as the director of construction and maintenance services, a position he held until his death.

In the army he held the positions of officer commanding Harare Base Workshops and quartermaster staff officer grade 1 (Building and Estates).

He is survived by his wife Dorothy and five children.
