Ambassador Dionisios Sourvanos said the suspension was caused by the current world economic crisis.
The outgoing Ambassador of Greece to Cameroon, Dionisios Sourvanos, yesterday, June 30 declared that his country was suspending temporarily its embassy in Yaounde because the current world economic and financial crisis were seriously affecting Greece. He had a goodbye audience with the former Prime Minister, Ephraim Inoni during which the diplomat explained that he was going to Abuja, Nigeria from where the Greek embassy will cover Cameroon.
At the end of the audience, Dionisios Sourvanos declared to the press that Greece was a small country with over 90 embassies and 90 consulates abroad. "We are affected by the difficult economic and financial situation. So, we have to suspend operations in our embassies and consulates in certain countries", the Greek diplomat said. He however said the Greek consulate and six embassies of other countries in Yaounde will continue to give Schengen visas to people who want to travel to Greece.
Ambassador Dionisios further declared that from Abuja, he would continue to work to strengthen cooperations between Cameroon and Greece. The Greek Embassy in Cameroon went operational since 36 years ago.
During his one and half years stay in Cameroon, Dionisios Sourvanos discovered that the country has a lot of potentials and an interesting population. He wished that Cameroon strengthens its role in the Central African Sub-region and consolidates relations with its big neighbour, Nigeria so as to become more prominent.
