The Gambia Youth Actors Association organized a cultural festival at Latrikunda football field at the Kairaba Avenue. The programme started with a March pass from traffic light to the football field with different cultural groups each displaying their cultural dances.
Mrs. Matty Jobe the President of (GAMYAA) said the purpose of this association is to enlighten young people about their culture and also to promote the acting skills of students especially when it comes to the movie industry. She went further to say that the association was formed in December 2008 and launched in February 2009 and consists of 40 members. She also said that they will tirelessly ensure that culture is celebrated like the way Malaria and Women's Day are being celebrated. She said they are working towards it by consulting Economic community of West African State (ECOWAS) and the (EU) in order for them to foster a project.
Honourable Sheriff Gomez, the Minister of youths, sports and culture, said it is a policy at youth and sports to encourage young people to involve in such skills training.
He said he is proud of seeing young Gambians trying to participate in the movies industry. George Gomez adviced the association and said the Gambia government and the Department of Youth and Sports are working tirelessly to establish a movies industry which may also serve as tourist attraction.
The Banjul Cultural Group performed on stage showing the love they have for their culture followed by the wild hunters who did extremely well. Drama group from Muslim Senior secondary school also performed on stage. Other cultural groups such as the Fula Allawaly, Kubuka Manjako and the Tallinding Gillipity were all awarded certificates of participation and the media houses that attended this programme such as Foroyaa, The Point, Today and the eye to name a few. The vote of thanks was given by Modou Leigh a member of the Association who congratulated all participants and their advisers for making this programme a success.
