The Permanent Secretary Department of State for Youth and Sports, Mr. Mam Mbayick Njie, said the issue of employment creation for young people has become critical for the development and achievement as well as maintenance of peace for Africa and the wider world.
He said it behooves on everybody, including parents, teachers and government to do whatever they can to help young people acquire skills so as to prepare them for a better future.
Mr. Njie made this remarks on Thursday, 25th June, 2009, at the 12 graduation ceremony of Gambia Scout Little Tree located at Bakoteh.
Eighty four students have completed courses in the areas of secretarial study, carpentry, auto mechanics, sewing and IT received certificates. Among these graduates, forty four completed their studies this year while forty graduated last year. The Youth and Sports permanent secretary further told the gathering that skills acquisition is fundamental to the development of the human mind.
Mr. Njie advised them that as a leader it is always important for one to have a positive attitude when it comes to problem solving adding that leadership is not about the personality who occupies a certain office, but about the hunger and zeal to leave a legacy behind.
He told the graduates that they have a crucial role to play in the socio-economic advancement of this nation noting that his department has tasked itself to achieve excellence in youth and sports development.
The Youth and Sports PS challenged the graduates to be pro-active rather than allow themselves to be engulfed by the culture of idleness.
Giving a brief history of the Little Tree Skill Centre, Mr. Pa Omar Bojang said the project started in July 1987 and that the Skills Centre started admitting students in 1996 with only six students.
He remarked that the main objective of the centre is to educate and train individuals to become self supportive and not to rely on anybody regardless of where one finds himself and herself.
Highlighting some of the achievements registered by the Centre, Mr. Bojang said some of the instructors currently serving the Centre are its products.
Other speakers at the ceremony included Mr. Amat Sowe, the principal of the Skill Centre.
The ceremony was entertained by the Scout Band.
