Kampala — Uganda Athletics Federation (UAF) has introduced two more regional track and field championships to bring the number of MTN sponsored regional competitions in Uganda to six.
According to UAF's publicity secretary Namayo Mawerere, the two track and field events are part of the federation's development plans to spot talent at the grassroots as well as make the sport of athletics popular.
The Eastern Regional Championship is slated for this weekend in Amuria and will run concurrently on the same day with the 5th edition of the Mayank championship to take place in Yumbe.
The events will also serve as a continuation of the search for qualifiers to the 12th World Athletics Championships due August 15-23 in Berlin, Germany.
Dorcus Inzikuru's 3000m steeplechase gold in the 2005 Helsinki Championships and Moses Kipsiro's 5000m bronze in the 2007 Osaka event are two of only three medals Uganda has ever won at the World Athletics Campionships. The first was won by 400m runner Davis Kamoga in 1997 at the Championships hosted in Athens.
