Harare — Zimbabwe Prime Minister Morgan Tsvangirai says he is convinced that his wife was not assassinated, putting to rest speculation about the fatal road accident that became the unity government's first biggest test after its inauguration in February.
The circumstances leading to Mrs Susan Tsvangirai's death were some of the most uncomfortable issues that confronted the former opposition leader during his three week tour of the United States and Europe that ended at the weekend.
The Tsvangirais were involved in an accident weeks after President Robert Mugabe's former arch rival joined the unity government and Mrs Tsvangirai died on the spot.
Speculation was rife that the accident was planned after Mr Tsvangirai's Movement for Democratic Change (MDC) said it was launching its own investigations.
Government said it was investigating a commercial farmer after he photographed the accident scene before the police arrived.
But results of both investigations have not been made public.
"I can safely say it was an accident," Mr Tsvangirai said in Paris, a day before he returned to Zimbabwe. I was involved in the accident and I could have died there. I know what happened."
"There is bound to be speculation because of Zimbabwe's history of accidents involving high profile people that have not been properly explained but I will be the first one to say the one that unfortunately took away my wife's life was genuine.
Scores of senior politicians have died on Zimbabwe's roads since independence in 1980 after falling out of favour with the rulers and investigations into their deaths have remained closely guarded secrets.
Last week, the wife of an army general who was found dead inside his vehicle on a railway level crossing ruffled feathers when she put an advert in the state media saying she believed her husband was assassinated.
Brigadier Armstrong Gunda died in 2007 after he was linked to a group of army officers who were implicated in an alleged plot to topple Mr Mugabe.
Mr Tsvangirai said he never contemplated abandoning politics after the accident because his wife would have wanted him to continue.
I knew her wish was to see the full democratisation of Zimbabwe, he said. That route (leaving politics) was also not considered in the party and instead we were encouraged to fulfill the mandate we were given by people.
The former trade unionists survived a number of attempts on his life including a severe bashing at the hands of the police after he tried to attend a prayer meeting in May 2007.
Mr Mugabe said his then fierce opponent deserved the bashing because he had provoked the police.
But Mr Tsvangirai who was forced to defend the 85-year old Mr Mugabe's right to remain in government despite an electoral defeat said he had developed a good working relationship with the veteran ruler.
"We have reached a stage where we had to ask ourselves if our acrimonious rivalry was benefiting Zimbabweans, Mr Tsvangirai said.
"Around this time last year it was totally inconceivable that I will sit in the same cabinet with Mugabe.
"But now I will be the first one to defend his right to a place in the transition. Our relationship is business like."
Last year, Mr Tsvangirai who beat President Mugabe in March elections pulled out of the June 27 presidential election runoff citing mounting violence against his supporters.

I can very well undertand Morgan's stand.
He wants criminal Mugabe gone. His strategy is to get rid of him by fair means. And that's what his wife also wanted. So it is not a good strategy to pursue any investigation now about the death since bloodstained Mugabe will definitely come to be blamed for his major role in the plot.
Tsvangirai cannot for now fight the CIO and the Army. It's a good strategy. It takes into consideration the higher interests of the nation.
Otherwise, Tsvangirai knows quite deep in his heart that bloodstained Mugabe must have had a hand in the accident.
Truth will triumph, but now is the time to continue the work to show Zimbos there is another way than Mugabe's to revive the country!

Rumblings of a witch caught red-handed after over-doing the nightly business. Even after being found naked in the grave Prem will still say that she does not know how she came to be there - among the graves. But there is no doubt in the eyes of everyone who set eyes on the witch that everything on her points to the nightly business of opening graves human flesh and bones, some in the mouth and some in her hands.
Prem still believes that she can get away with murder. It is practically impossible sister. The car and driver who killed Susan Tsvangirai belong to McGee, the top CIA agent in Zimbabwe. There is no doubt therefore that Susan was killed by the CIA and MI6. The actual target was Tsvangi himself as he had defied instructions from the Bush and Brown regimes not to join the Unity Government.
When Tsvangi went to Botswana for a so-called "second medical opinion" the CIA followed and told him to shoot down any attempt to point fingers at the CIA and MI6. Tsvangi was recently in America and was again told to sweep the issue under the carpet. Poor Tsvangi!!!
Thus, today he says "I was involved in that accident, I know what happened" and yet previously he said he did not know what happened. It is strange that his memory is now suddenly back and he has a vivid picture of what took place just before and after the accident.
Anything to the contrary will tarnish the image of the real killers of Susan and the killers are the financiers of the puppet and stooge MDC party. How can one implicate one's masters, the people who butter one's bread? It has NEVER happened and will not start with Tsvangirai.
Facts Are Stubborn To show that in Zimbabwe, a pre-school-going child does not need to attend any of our kindergattens, there is already MDC-T, a ready-made one. Never take those people in that pseudo-political party serious. Remember the only time you hear about their manifesto, ideology, economic, any type of plans for future Zimbabwe is when their chief adviser, the ex-Rhodesian mercenary, Eddy Cross is mumbling about the reverse of the Land Reform!(Read today's Zimdaily) Otherwise, their trademark is, boycott, strike, no to land for the black Zimbabweans, no to new constitutions, no to black empowerment, no to Gono because he resisted Western Hegemony, no to the Attorney General because he is intelligent for the Brits, no to Mugabe because he is the only, only remaining Africa cadre to stand this Imperial Hegemony, no to black power. That is MDC-T slogan, to take us back to, before 1980. Wake up Zimbabweans, lets be honest with each other, Zimbabwe has suffered because of sanctions which were called for by Tsvangirai and MDC-T. I was in SIDA conference room in Stockholm, Sweden when Tsvangirai was perfoming in 2001-2002 begging the West to put sanctions on his own people. It is his obligation to see to it that the Zimbabwe Democracy Recovery Act is removed. Look Zimbabwe cannot even get loans from World Bank, IMF, African Development Bank, name it. No trade. THIS MAN OWES US AT LEAST AN APOLOGY OTHERWISE GOD WILL NEVER FORGIVE HIM!!!! Look, the west have one thing in common, PERMANENT INTEREST BUT NOT PERMANENT FRIENDS. So be careful, Tsvangirai, ask yourself where is, Savimbi, Kabila senior. If you test Muzungus cake, you should know that you have to deliver. Remember that accident was meant for you, the West are not happy with GNU!! You were supposed to deliver Mugabes head and the Land because you used their money through the Westminister Foundation, Kellog Foundation etc plus all these NGOs becareful!! The British created this foundation comprising of all the major political parties in Great Britain, Conservatives, Liberals and the Labour. They wanted to save the royal richness in Zimbabwe!!!
