Liberia: Woman, 35, Steals Baby

1 July 2009

Police have arrested a 35-year-old woman, Annie Broh, for allegedly stealing a five-month-old baby from a resident of New Kru on Bushrod Island.

The Chief of Women and Children Protection Unit of the Liberia National Police (LNP), Benetta Warnard, broke the news to journalist in Monrovia Tuesday.

Warnard said Broh was arrested 21:00 hours Monday night near the Ganta-Guinea border point of entry in Nimba County, en route to neighboring Guinea

Police have charged Madam Broh with kidnapping in connection with stealing of the baby.

Officer Warnard said the biological mother of the stolen baby reported the case at the headquarters of LNP upon which Police launched the manhunt for Broh.

She said the accused, Annie Broh, was arrested Monday evening while attempting to cross over to Guinea with the stolen baby.

The Assistant Police Chief said officers of the LNP assigned at the Ganta details are arranging transportation for the alleged kidnapper and the baby boy to be transported to Monrovia for further investigation.

She said the stolen baby is currently undergoing an International Rescue Committee's sponsored medication at a nearby health center in Ganta City.

When contacted, the biological mother of the baby, Rebecca Wesseh, said her baby was stolen on Monday from her room while working at the back of her house in New Kru Town.

She said up to now, her baby has not been breastfed and is affecting her breast.

In another development, the LNP has arrested two persons in connection to illegal possession of drugs.

According to the Police spokesman George Bardue, the two men, Luseni Kamara and Oscar Gbayee, were arrested at the James Springs Payne Airfield in Sinkor with 56 grams of heroin value at US$2,450.

Suspect Kamara told investigators that the drug was given to him by a Nigerian national only identified as Jerusalem.

Kamara said Jerusalem gave him the drug to take it to Zwedru, but in turn gave it to Oscar Gbayee who was on his way to Zwedru, Grand Gedeh County, by air.

Unfortunately, the Zwedru trip was cancelled; therefore, Gbayee returned the 56 grams of heroin to Luseni unknowingly.

According to the Police spokesman, while Gbayee was delivering the drug contained in an envelope to Kamara at the airport, the joint security intercepted the process and alerted the police immediately and both men were arrested by the LNP.

Both Gbayee and Kamara have since been charged with illegal possession of drug which violates the public health law of Liberia, and have been sent to court for prosecution.
