Sierra Leone: 'President Koroma is Jose Mourinho' - Alpha Khan

2 July 2009

Freetown — Minister of Mines and Mineral resources, Hon. Alpha Kanu believes His Excellency the President of the Republic of Sierra Leone, Dr Ernest Bai Koroma, is as tactical as famous Inter Milan FC Portuguese Coach, Jose Mourinho, in terms of managerial skills.

"President Ernest Bai Koroma is just like Jose Mourinho. He carefully picks his Cabinet just as Mourinho picks his team," said Hon. Kanu.

According to the minister, President Koroma knows the abilities, capabilities and qualities of his Cabinet and exactly where to place them.

Just like Mourinho, said Hon. Kanu, President Koroma knows how to make changes to his Cabinet. In his first changes (reshuffle) to Cabinet since he was elected to the highest seat in the land in August 2007, President Koroma switched Hon. Alpha Kanu's position from Presidential Affairs Minister (where some people thought he was doing well) to Minister of Mines, where the minister said he's now doing excellently.

Other notable changes to the President's first Cabinet include Hon. Haja Afsatu Kabbah from the Ministry of Energy and Power to the Ministry of Fisheries and Marine Resources; David Carew from Minster of Finance to Minister of Trade and Industry; and Mohamed D. Koroma from Deputy Minister of Information and Communication to Deputy Minister in the Ministry of Health and Sanitation.

Kanu said all those changes were based on the tactical ingenuity of his President rather than incompetence or lack of performance on the part of the affected Ministers.

The minister of Mines further likened President Koroma to Team Manager/Coach Sir Alex Fergusson of English Premier League side Manchester United FC, Arsene Wenger of Arsenal FC, and Rafael Benitez of Liverpool FC in terms of managerial competence.

And in terms of leadership potential he equated President Koroma to the likes of former British Prime Minister Tony Blair, US President Barrack Obama and President Paul Kigame of Rwanda.

"And in future President Koroma will be an African statesman like Nelson Mandela," said Kanu, who was speaking Tuesday during an interview on 98.1 FM radio's Good Morning Freetown regarding the US$800, 000 worth of diamonds reportedly smuggled from Sierra Leone but which were intercepted by US authorities at the John F. Kennedy Airport in April 2009.
