Kenya: Kenyans Convicted in China May Serve Terms Locally

1 July 2009

Nairobi — Kenyans convicted of drug charges in China could serve their sentences locally if a prisoner exchange programme is approved.

While promising to take up the matter with the government, Chinese assistant minister Zhai Jun however pointed out that China would consider the convicts on a case by case basis.

In June, Foreign Affairs minister Moses Wetang'ula was questioned on the fate of the 27 Kenyans in Chinese prisons, 22 of them young girls.

Mr Zhai was speaking when he met Mr Wetang'ula on the sidelines of the Ordinary Session of the African Union executive council on Wednesday.
