Nairobi — Lack of a Leader of Government Business would not affect operations in the 10th Parliament, Speaker Kenneth Marende said on Wednesday.
Speaking in Naivasha during a workshop for liaison committee members, Mr Marende said: "This issue cannot affect the operations of the august House particularly in the light of the communication that I made early this year."
Mr Marende temporarily took over the chairmanship of the committee which determines the agenda of parliamentary proceedings, but said he would relinquish the post when the President and PM finally agree on who should be Leader of Government Business.
He ended the stalemate which had stalled business in the House after Prime Minister Raila Odinga and Vice-President Kalonzo Musyoka both claimed the right to the post.
The Speaker said he hoped the issue would be resolved soon. "It's the prerogative of the executive and I can only play a supportive role to see the executive find its feet in identifying the Leader of Government Business," he said.
Mr Marende said Wednesday's workshop was to familiarise the newly-elected committee chairpersons with their roles.
He said the workshop would cover relationship between the committees and the media and also how they conduct themselves while representing Kenya abroad. He described committees as the engines of Parliament.
