Abuja — The National Centre for Women Development (NCWD), alongside other ministries and partner agencies yesterday held a one day validation meeting on the findings from a field data gathering exercise, aimed towards the establishment of the National Gender Data Bank (NGDB).
Director -General of the centre, Hajia Fatima Hassan said the idea for the establishment of an NGDB was borne out of the realization that lack of adequate data on true gender disparities daily as well as in the economic, social and political spheres, have frequently given rise to inappropriate policies, plans and projects in Nigeria.
"The NGDB project hosted by the NCWD in collaboration with a multi-technical team drawn from line ministries and agencies is aimed at strengthening national and local capacities to generate and utilize gender statistics for sustainable development," she added.
The director-general disclosed that the exercise has further established the urgent need to generate and house gender disaggregated data in a common bank at the national and state levels in order to enhance critical analysis of the differential needs, priorities and constraints experienced by women and men.
The lead consultant on the NGDB, Dr Amin Al-Amin presented the interim report on the nationwide gender data captured that contained statistics on the national gender profile, sectoral profile and zonal profile.
Our reporter learnt that the validation exercise is the last stage of the data before it is finally deposited in the gender bank.
