Nigeria: NURTW Tasks FG on Road Maintenance

2 July 2009

Abuja — National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW) yesterday asked the Federal Government to ensure proper maintenance of interstate roads across the country.

The union made the charge following "government's recent award of contracts to reputable road construction companies for the rehabilitation of about 26 major highways across the country."

A statement signed by NURTW's President, Dr. Gidado Hamman after the national executive council (NEC) meeting of the union in Abuja urged government "to imbibe the culture of maintenance with regard to roads being rehabilitated and others across the country generally."

It urged the Federal Government to closely monitor the road projects "so as to ensure that the road projects are not only executed on schedule, but also to specifications."

Speaking on government insistence on deregulating the country's oil and gas sector, the NEC noted that "it unanimously adopted the position of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) on the issue of deregulation of oil sector and call on government to reconsider the decision considering the economic implication of such action.

"In the alternative" union "advises the Federal Government to repair all the nation's refineries for optimum production as against the current practice of importing refined products into the country."

The union applauded the recent amnesty granted militants in the Niger Delta by the Federal Government, just as it urged the militants to take advantage of government's offer and renounce violence.
