Residents of Phase I Federal Housing Authority Quarter, Karu, yesterday called on Power Holding Company of Nigeria (PHCN) to install prepaid meters in their apartments, so that they can know the exact quantity of electricity consumed.

The residents, who are staff of the Nigeria Intelligence Agency, said most houses in the quarters have no meters and PHCN staff collect between N2,500 to N3,000 as monthly electricity bills per flat in the estate.

"How they came about this figure is something we do not understand but we feel that with prepaid meters, each flat owner will be assured that he actually consumed what he is paying for," Chief Iyke, a resident stated.

Mr. Emmanuel, another resident decried the constant power outages and called on PHCN officials at Karu to improve on their services.

Responding, a PHCN official at Karu blamed the shortage of meters in their store as the reason why meters were not fixed in some apartment in the estate.

He however disclosed that with the new installation of mini transformers in various locations of the territory, every apartment will be fitted with prepaid meters, while electricity supply would improve.
