Cameroon: Multitude in Transportation Agencies

2 July 2009

It is holiday time and there is congestion at most travelling agencies.

Another period has come when there is a lot of movement from one part of the town to another, one region to the other for holidays. This is thus the peak season for transportation agencies during which they make some more money. At the different agencies in town, there is heavy congestion. Parents with children, students and their luggages all waiting to jump into the buses and travel to their destinations.

At one of the bus stations visited by reporters, the passengers were many though not so much compared to the crowd at ordinary periods. However, the ticket agent said there has been a slight increase in the number of traveller. The transport fare in the agency has gone up a little in some agencies that believe to offer quality services. "The bus gets full faster and we make trips a day than during ordinary season", the agent said. Most of those travelling get there early so as to leave on time. At about noon the agency had already made 10 trips to Yaoundé and from Yaoundé to Douala.

At another bus station visited, the population was more that the previous one. Although it is not the popular type of bus agency, most passengers preferred it for security reasons as they said. A passenger, Nwombo Robert, who was travelling with his daughter to Yaounde said the issue is not that the fare is affordable but security. He added that the drivers are steady and get to their destination at the required time, which is three hours thirty minutes. He also said the drivers are disciplined and do respect the passengers, unlike other drivers who stopping to pick up more passengers consequently getting to their destinations late, or running on top speed to catch up with time.

By midday, the agency had made 14 trips just to Yaoundé and there was still a large crowd waiting for more buses. A customer to the agency said he went there at 6:00 a.m. hoping to leave with the first bus but to his surprise, he had to go with the fourth bus. There are also trips to the South West as well as the North West and West Regions which mostly take off at night.
