Uganda: Child Abuse, Domestic Violence Hit Bunyoro

Kampala — Cases of child neglect and domestic violence are on the rise in Bunyoro region. Mid-western Police spokesperson Diana Nandawula said the Police registered over 50 cases of child neglect and domestic violence every month in Hoima, Kibaale, Masindi and Bulisa districts.

Nandawula attributed the increase in child neglect to the rampant break-down of marriages in the region. She said many children in the region were not attending school as a result of being neglected.

Speaking to The New Vision on Saturday, Nandawula said many women have been beaten and maimed in domestic wrangles.

She added that domestic violence cases were complex for the Police to handle because of the fear to break up people's families.

Nandawula said the Police was being frustrated in their efforts to investigate domestic violence and child neglect because women withdraw their complaints due to intimidation by their husbands.
