Maiduguri — A three-day workshop organized by the north east chapter Supreme Council for Islamic Affairs (SCIA) aimed at finding lasting solution to the incessant controversy generated from sighting the Month of Ramadan has began in Maiduguri, Borno state.
Declaring the workshop open, Governor Ali Sheriff stressed the need for traditional institutions and Islamic scholars to redouble efforts towards restoring the much cherished societal norms and values so as to reorient youths to engage in productive life.
Governor Sheriff observed that majority of conflicts were being caused by suspicion, land or boundary disputes, proliferation of arms, religious and ethnic intolerance, among others.
As a custodian of peace and cultural heritage of the society, he said, traditional rulers and clerics should consider the in their deliberations the major problems undermining the well being of the people and recommends possible solutions.
In his remarks, Shehu of Borno, Alhaji Abubakar Garbai El-Kanemi explained that the workshop was part of the deliberations of the six-member technical committee set up by the council to strengthen its administrative and general activities to make it more effective.
He revealed that participants at the workshop are expected to collate and harmonize inputs from various states in order to make SCIA has a strong management, saying master blueprint would later be produced to guide the council and unite Muslims especially on the moon sighting.
