Nigeria: Sanitary Inspectors to Inspect Premises

Mustapha Suleiman

2 July 2009

Abuja — The Federal Government has resuscitated inspection of premises by the sanitary inspectors known as Environmental Health Officers throughout the country.

This was made known yesterday by the Minister of Environment Mr. John Odey at a ministerial press briefing to commemorate the 2009 National Environment Day in Abuja.

The minister said the sanitation inspection is in collaboration with states and local governments with the setting up of mobile courts to try sanitary offenders.

"With the re-awakening of House-to-House Sanitary inspection by Environmental officers (EHOs) and enforcement of environmental standards, the problem of indiscriminate waste disposal will be checked. I would like to seize this opportunity to commend the efforts of those States and Local Governments that have considerably implemented the National Environment Sanitation Policy and Action Plan, thus ensuring the promotion of sound environmental sanitation practices in their respective domains," he said.
