Nigeria: Lagos, Katsina Bag Environmental Awards

Abuja — The Lagos state governor, Mr. Babatunde Fashola, and Katsina State First Lady, Hajiya Fatima Shema, yesterday bagged environmental awards in different categories organised by Federal Ministry of Environment in recognition of individuals that have contributed immensely towards environmental improvement in the country.

The awardees were presented with their trophy at a ceremony held at Sheraton Hotel to commemorate 2009 National Sanitation Day.

Lagos state won the cleanest state capital award while the wife of Katsina State governor won the innovative indigenous award in environmental sanitation practices.

Katsina first lady was represented by Hajiya Hadiza Matazu who said that the award will ginger Katsina first lady to do more in the area of environmental improvement.

Chairman of the House Committee on Environment and Ecology Senator Grace Bent called for improved efforts in tackling sanitation problem in the country. She commended Lagos state government in what she termed laudable effort in making Lagos a model city in the country.

"I must commend the Lagos State government for putting everything right in ensuring clean and conducive environment in the Lagos State. This shows that environmental issues can be tackled if there is strong will by our administrators to do so," she said.

In the National Quiz Competition category organised by the Ministry, Government Secondary School, Mangu, Plateau State came first while Model Secondary School, Nsuka and Model Secondary school, Miatama, Abuja were runner up respectively.
