Uganda: Citizens to Stay in Iraq Despite U.S. Pullout

Kampala — Ugandans working in Iraq as security guards will not be affected by the ongoing pullout of American forces, Daily Monitor has learnt.

Local security firms recruiting Ugandans on behalf of the Americans said yesterday that the ongoing pullout should not worry anyone because there is still employment in Iraq.

Ms Kellen Kayonga, the proprietor of Asker security firm, told Daily Monitor yesterday that contrary to the rumours that the closure of American camps would see Ugandans returning home, most of the firms' contracts are still running until 2011 when the last US troops pull out.

"I was given a contract up to 2011 and this month alone I am taking over 300 youth. So this propaganda is meant to dissuade our youth from seeking employment in Iraq," Ms Kayonga said.

Dreshak proprietor Dheeka Alok also dismissed claims that Ugandans were to return because Americans were closing some bases. "Ugandans will definitely come back but for now those saying should wait until 2011. Even the Americans are not entirely closing all bases," Mr Dheeka said.

US forces started pulling out of Iraq yesterday in fulfillment of a pledge by President Barack Obama to hand Iraq back to its own people.
