Kampala — OYAM district council chairman Charles Okello Engola Mac Odwogo has offered his monitoring allowances as school fees for Betty Amongi and her sister Grace Ajolo who dropped out of school in 2007.
Engola announced the donation during a visit at Awio parish, Iceme sub-county.
"All my monitoring allowances towards any project should be channelled to pay the fees of these two girls. It should continue until their fees are fully completed," Engola said.
Amongi and Ajolo, former students of St. Monica Vocational Training Centre in Gulu, dropped out of school in 2007 when they lost their father. They are now dependant on their brother who cannot afford to take them back to school.
According to the record seen by The New Vision, Amongi and Ajolo who were in their third year at the institute, were sent back home over a debt of sh330,000 which they were supposed to pay before they could sit their final examinations.
In another development, the council has also approved the implementation of the Mac Odwogo Education fund initiated by Engola to support disadvantaged, bright students in finishing their education. The fund aims at increasing the number of students accessing secondary education in the district. "This initiative is to help all students without any discrimination on political, racial, religious or cultural grounds," the secretary for education, Francis Okello Olwa, said.
He added that the fund will be implemented in the new financial year to help fulfill the pledge made by Engola during political campaigns.
