Uganda: Jeckaki Tired of Being Shadow Stars

If you were used to listening to Jeckaki's music as opposed to seeing the band, then brace for change. The backup band for Jose Chameleone, the Longombas, Nameless, Necessary Noise and Amani is stepping out and attempting to fly on its own.

At a fiery (literally) launch at A-Y Makindye last week, Jeckaki stepped out as a band, although the initial crowd was not much to write home about. In the middle of the show, A-Y premises caught fire. The fans and band joined hands to put it out before it could destroy much of the place.

Later, the show continued. They registered better crowds in Kyaliwajjala and Kanyanya.

Jeckaki was formed in 2004 as a back up band by a group of young instrumentalists after their former boss, Fred Ssebatta, left the country for treatment in South Africa for seven months. Led by Richard Jemba, they include Clyff Keys Mutebi, Soweed Kiwanuka, and Achilles Kiwanuka.

The four founders' initials formed the band's name although the two Kiwanukas later left. The remaining two recruited Aziz Azion, Morris Hasa and Dandaloo who have also left the group for solo careers.

Their new album has six songs; Obugagga Si Kusonda, Ekiwala, Akwata Empola, Nkwagala, Gunumye and Kagwirawo.
