Gambia: Samger Progresses to the FA Cup Quarter Final

Lamin A. Darboe

1 July 2009

The academy lads-Samger who was on stand by in the FA Cup championship on Friday has opened their fixture with 3-2 defeat over Jambanjelly at the Box Bar mini Stadium in Brikama.

Jambanjelly who earlier run in the tournament dominated Upper Badibou and Brikamaba, came to the Saturday's fixture with great zeal and determination to snatch the victory from Samger.

These qualities were evidently proven during keenly contested matches. Samger went ahead after 24th minute of the first half when Lamin Samateh slotted in the opener.

Jambanjelly bounced back in the 28th minute as Dodou Camara capitalized on his chances and slammed the ball in ending the score line at half time to remain at 1-1.

After the technical beef up during recession by both teams, the second half resumed with renewed vigor and strong quest for victory.

In the 64th minute, Buba Jallow alias "Melesh" put Samger in front again when he took the ball from his captain and slotted it coyly home.

Upon scoring the second goal Samger players were overwhelmed and thought victory has been decided, so they started playing entertaining style.

However, they were soon contained by determined Jambanjelly side. Barely six minutes from the end of the game Sam Gibba leveled the scores for Jambanjelly in the 84th minute, before Boto Manneh beautifully tugged in Ebrima Jaiteh's cross from the flanges to rap up the game to 3-2.

Jane Joof for Samger and Benjamin Eze both coaches described the match as hard fought game. "Both teams played well but at the end of the day the luckiest side got the victory." They said.
