Gambia: Vendors Appeal to BAC

Modou Kanteh

2 July 2009

The president of the Brikama Sandika has appealed to the authorities concerned to help them with a truck to remove the garbage piles in the area.

Abdoulie Sandika Jallow told the Daily Observer that they are happy with the place allocated to them by the Council. He said their concern now is for the garbage that are all over the place. He said the place is cleaned on daily basis but there is no truck for them to take it away. He appealed to the Brikama Area Council to do their part as required.

The Sandika president said "Council should not collect their taxes and go, but should also provide what is expected of them. Due to the garbage inside the market, women are forced to sell on the road which may cause accidents," he said. Masireh Bojang, a vendor, expressed similar sentiments. She said if the Council can perform its side by collecting the garbage, it will help them a lot. "The garbage is very dangerous and unhealthy here. We cannot sell inside the market because of the garbage. The Council should do something to collect it," she said.
