Zambia: Council Threatens to Close 'Dry' Zimco House

2 July 2009

THE Lusaka City Council (LCC) has threatened to close ZIMCO House in Lusaka if the National Housing Authority (NHA) does not restore water supply to the building within two days.

LCC public relations officer Henry Kapata said in an interview in Lusaka yesterday that according to the Public Health Act Cap 295 of the Laws of Zambia, any building without running water should be closed down.

Mr Kapata said going by a report the LCC received yesterday, the ZIMCO building has not had water for the past one week and NHA should ensure that the Lusaka Water and Sewerage Company restored supply immediately.

"It has come to our attention that ZIMCO House has had no water for close to a week and it is our duty to close down any institution without proper water and sanitation," he said.

He said it was unacceptable for a building as big as ZIMCO House not to have water because it might be dangerous in case of emergencies like a fire, as fire fighters would need to draw water from within the building.

Meanwhile, Mr Kapata said the local authority would be going round all bars to instruct bar owners to put up notices which prohibit people under the age of 18 from entering their business premises.
