THE new investor that has taken over Luanshya Copper Mines (LCM), China Non-ferrous Metal Group Company (CNMC), has started re-engaging former employees, who have been flocking to the general offices in large numbers.
A check yesterday showed that an interim management unit, being referred to as CNMC-LCM Taking Over Working Team, had started re-engaging former workers some of whom were already undergoing orientation.
Some of the former miners interviewed said they had registered with the interim management and that they had started orientation lessons as required for technical duties and those who were supposed to operate underground.
Former Mineworkers Union of Zambia (MUZ) Roan branch chairperson Stanslous Mwiimbe said that former employees were being taken on in phases and the technical employees were going through the orientation process.
Some of the former miners said new management started inviting people for the first phase last week on Friday and that they started reporting to the general offices on Monday.
An interim management team consists of some managers from Non-ferrous Corporation Africa Mining (NFCA) Chambishi Mine and departmental heads from LCM, while the team leader is Luo Geng.
Some people interviewed said the interim team had been sent to Luanshya to coordinate the re-engagement and re-opening of the mine. The team is also trying to put in place an organisational structure.
There were officials including the Chinese at the general offices, which were previously deserted.
On June 6, the Zambian Government signed an agreement with CNMC for the takeover of LCM, which was officially handed over last week in Luanshya.
CNMC pledged to start full operations in the next six months after putting in place all machinery and other logistics.
The mine ceased operations on December 29, last year and was placed under care and maintenance, as management cited high production costs and falling copper prices on the international market
Later, the Government and LCM management under Enya Holdings negotiated the exit plan.
