Tanzania: Players Eye Pretoria Pool Table Tourney

2 July 2009

Tanzania is set to compete in the African Pool Table Championship that will be held in Pretoria, South Africa in October.

Local pool table players will feature for the second year in a row after their brilliant campaigns last year.

The previous edition saw Tanzanian Omari Akida emerging among the best players in Swaziland and won a place in the African Select team.

In a bid to promote the sport in the country, the Tanzania Breweries Limited (TBL) has stepped forward to sponsor the team in the continental championship.

Firm's official Fimbo Buttallah said the national team players would be picked from the upcoming National Pool Table Championship.

The championship is scheduled for August and prior to that, all regions are required to stage competitions from which the best player will be selected.

Battallah pointed out that the firm dished out Sh240 million that would be spent to stage the tournament.

Chairman of the country's pool table governing body, TAPA, Isaac Tohocho was confident that the sport would soon be popular countrywide.
