Kanungu — Police in Kanungu are hunting for two teachers over allegations of defilement and helping their victims procure abortions that led to the death of two secondary school girls.

Police are also looking for another teacher who allegedly murdered a baby of a pupil he had defiled after the girl allegedly refused to abort.

Christine Kyomugisha, 19, a Senior Six student at Sani Giovanni School in Makiro Sub-county died last week after allegedly procuring an abortion with the help of a teacher identified as Papius Niwagaba. Mr Niwagaba is reportedly on the run.

Another unidentified Senior Three student at Burema Secondary School reportedly died at the beginning of June after an abortion resulting from a pregnancy by her teacher.

Police are also looking for a teacher at Mafuga Primary School only identified as Kamani for allegedly killing a baby born by an unidentified Primary Six pupil he had allegedly impregnated.

Kanungu RDC Ben Bwagi Rullonga said Mr Kamani invited the girl to his home and killed the baby. The girl allegedly took to her heels after witnessing her baby's death fearing that Kamani would kill her as well.

The suspects have allegedly fled to the Democratic Republic of Congo.

Statistics from Kanungu District health department show that 120 abortions have been procured at different private and government health units in less than six months. Seventy cases of abortion have been carried outside health units yet 60 per cent of the abortions are of girls below 18.

"Most secondary schools head teachers are not serious. They send children away late in the evening; they do not monitor their teachers. Some are drunkards; others come late while others are casual absentees," Mr Rullonga said.

He added that teachers' failure to report incidents of criminal nature such as strikes, thefts and abortions promotes insecurity.
