CHAIRMAN, Oyo State Local Government Service Commission, Chief Kola Gbadamosi said some local government officials who used fake university certificates had absconded upon discovery that the commission had contacted the schools they were claiming to have attended.
Though the chairman remained evasive on the number of the council officials who used fake certificates, he said the certificate forgers were fond of giving the names of universities that are far away thinking that the commission would not take the pains of finding out the authenticity of their claims.
He added that the commission had done a lot to rid the 33 local councils of endemic corruption which has tainted its performance.
He lamented that the political structure evolving in the country made it difficult for politicians at the local government level to clearly identify boundaries between themselves and career workers who are mostly professionals.
On the financial strength of the commission, he complained that if not for the intervention of the State governor, Otunba Adebayo Alao-Akala, various local government councils would have been weighed down by inability to pay their workers' salaries.
The global economic meltdown, he said, had greatly affected the training schedule of the commission, adding that the insufficient fund for this exercise had limited the volume of training given to workers in the local government service.
Other challenges facing the commission, he said, included year 2006 promotion of eligible eligible officer in the local government service and upgrading of suitably qualified local government staff and many others.
