Kampala — FOUR men have been charged with being in possession and selling fake cement and remanded to Luzira Prison until July 16.
The four denied the charges before magistrate Janeva Natukunda at Mwanga II Court in Kampala. Court heard that the four suspects were found with over 400 bags of adulterated cement.
The suspects had allegedly been producing the substandard cement with the trademark 'Portland'. Prosecution said the four were arrested following a tip-off from an informer.
The first witness, Tom Lule, a technician with Uganda National Bureau of Standards, said after a tip-off he reported the matter to Kafumbe Mukasa Police Post. Lule said the Police raided the suspects' premises at Mengo Kisenyi and found them mixing sand and clay which they allegedly sold as cement.
Lule, however, said he did not test the sample to determine whether it conforms to required standards. Natukunda remanded the suspects, who appeared without a lawyer, because they did not have sureties.
Under the bureau's code, a person found guilty of selling or producing counterfeit goods is liable to one year imprisonment. Under the Penal Code, a person found guilty faces at least two years in jail.
