Former auditor-general Shauket Fakie and Absa CEO Maria Ramos have turned down approaches from the ANC to serve on the SABC's interim board.

A senior ANC MP said today that the party was keen to have Ramos and Fakie serve on the board because of their expertise, but both had declined the nominations.

In Fakie's case this was because the company he now works for, MTN, did not permit him to serve on more than one board. Ramos had declined on the basis of a conflict of interest, as the SABC banks with Absa, which she heads.

During the submission of candidates' names by the National Assembly's committee on communications yesterday, the ANC also nominated businesswoman Irene Charnley, media consultant Libby Lloyd, Unisa academic Phil Mtimkulu and advocates Leslie Sedibe and William Mokhare.
