Ado-Ekiti — Detained Coordinator of the Oodua Peoples Congress (OPC), Ekiti State, Prince Niyi Adedipe, is lying critically ill at the University of Ado-Ekiti (UNAD) Teaching Hospital, after he collapsed on Tuesday, during his trial at an Ado-Ekiti High Court.

Adedipe, who coordinates Dr Fredrick Fasehun's faction of OPC in the state, had been in detention for over one year, after he was arrested over armed robbery.

The accused, currently standing trial over conspiracy, kidnapping and robbery, leveled against him by Ekiti State Government, was ordered by the trial Judge, Ayo Daramola, to be taken to the hospital when his health condition deteriorated.

During his trial on Tuesday, his persistent cough continued to disrupt court proceedings, and was immediately rushed to the emergency section of the hospital.

He lamented his ordeal in the prison, and appealed to government to temper justice with mercy.

"I have been told now that I had chronic ulcer and I could not even eat well. I have suffered enough in the prison. Please help me to tell the governor that I don't want to die in prison. I know we have been good friends before, but we cannot continue to fight forever. This is my humble appeal to Mr Governor," Adedipe pleaded.
